When is the Right Time for a Career Move?

The other day I talked to someone who was bright, ambitious and hard-working but stuck in a job rut.

She knew she was stuck in the motions but it was bearable. “At least I have a good income and stability,” she said.

When you’re in this situation you’re like an apple with one little brown spot.

You stick it in the fridge and tell yourself “no problem I’ll just cut that part out and have it later as a snack.”

Then later when you remember it you open the fridge and “Ewwwwww it’s green, black and hairy and not edible anymore!” That’s what not fixing lack of fulfillment looks like.

If you don’t fix the problem when it appears it doesn’t get better.

It gets worse.

Most people think there’s plenty of time to make a change, but actually the more time you wait the harder it is.

Because the more you wait the more your skillset gets outdated, the more opportunities you lose out on and most of all

– the more your confidence plummets.

So When Is It Best To Make A Career Move?

I hear people make excuses all the time when it comes to career change.

Mostly it is time and comfort.

People find it so hard to get out of their comfort zone but unless you do that, you won’t get anywhere.

And for time, your brain loves to use timing as self-sabotaging excuse.

So every time you make a timing excuse make sure it’s genuinely logistical and is what you really want.

Your reasons shouldn’t sound like “this isn’t my year, maybe next year” or “maybe I’ll get a promotion soon, I’ll just wait for that”

Sometimes we do have good reasons to stay in the same career. But make sure they are the right reasons.

Most of my clients start my career programme when they hit rock bottom. When there are no choices left.

And that’s good whatever pushes you to be better.

But ideally you would want to build yourself up when things are not so bad.

You’ll have lesser worries and have the time to slowly grow yourself.

One of my clients said she has a lease and doesn’t want a change until after fall and my answer was excellent, that’s great. This would be the best time to work on creating a system and to work on your networking skills.

So if you build yourself up slowly when times are good then when you’re ready to make that career move, you’ll already have opportunities pouring in.

You don’t have to spend any extra time on branding and networking when you’re making the transition.
